I’ve been in the Everyday Carry (EDC) enthusiast world for a while now. It’s obviously a bit niche, but I enjoy the process of finding the perfect tool/item for a particular use case. It could be anything from the perfect pocket knife to light to pen and everything in between. Some people go all out, growing their EDC into a full always available bag of some sort. I’ve never been that type (I blame the climate where I live), but I do put stock in finding and carrying the right stuff for me.

Lately, I’ve been searching for the best wallet that aligns with my particular preferences. For years, I’ve carried the slimmest wallet I could find that wasn’t shrouded in “as seen on TV” vibes. Honestly, I have zero complaints about the construction and utility of it. It is a fantastic diseappear-in-your-front-pocket option.

However, I decided I wanted to go in a completely different direction for my next wallet. I’m in the process of attempting to go analog in a few very specific ways. To do that, I need to carry a pen and a notebook. I’ve always loved Field Notes, but they’re not always the easiest to carry in a hot & humid environment. I needed something a little smaller with some protection. I tried dozens of options and was quickly coming to the conclusion that it was a hopeless endeavour.

Then a couple months ago, Lochby announced their new Sidekick. I was immediately drawn to it as an option. It’s a unique size and layout that somehow is too small to hold a Field Notes but large enough to hold a full-size pen. My wife ordered it for me as a gift, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. Despite being one of the best priced notebook/wallet options I’ve seen, it’s also one of the highest quality ones I’ve used.

A neatly arranged pocket organizer containing cards, a pen, and a red notebook is flanked by a flashlight on the left and a multitool on the right.

On the left side, it comfortable holds my 6 cards and lots of cash. It could quite easily hold more cards than that, but I don’t use more. It’ll be handy the next time I need to throw in a hotel key and some travel receipts. On the right side, I have a Life Noble A7 notebook (affiliate link), some business cards (in a slot under the notebook), and a slim 3D printed utility knife (thanks, Cliff). In the pen slot is a full size Spoke Design pen.

That is a full loadout for a wallet, but it works surprisingly well. It folds smoothly and slides in/out of the pocket with ease. It also lays flat when open, making taking notes possible without being forced to remove the notebook.

A small flashlight, a Lochby Sidekick, and a folding knife with a lanyard are laid out on a wooden surface.

I’m very impressed with the Lochby Sidekick and would recommend it to almost anyone wanting something similar. It’s a departure from my typical slim wallet, but I really enjoy the larger capacity and functionality it offers. There are a few different color options to choose from, but I’m partial to the traditional brown look.
