What I'm Carrying

For years, I’ve been an EDC (Everyday Carry) enthusiast. I’ve gone down every rabbit hole you can imagine from Bugouts to Sebenzas to Shamwaris to Zebralights to Hank’s Lights…the list could go on. As I’ve aged (matured?) I’ve settled into a kit that works well for my lifestyle.

Here’s what I’ve been carrying on a daily basis:

Tool(s)

I was a traditional folding knife guy for many years, but I’ve grown to appreciate the good old fashioned multi-tool. Well, the modern version of the good old fashioned folding knife. Here’s is my setup:

I bought the holster that also allows me to carry the 711L Mini Ratchet and a Volty Bit, but that’s overkill for almost everyone (myself included). I wear it on my belt. It’s more discreet than you’d think and incredibly useful.

Wallet

I’ve used two wallets this year. For the first part of the year, I used a Lochby Sidekick. I really had very little complaints about it, but in the end I returned to my favorite wallet I’ve ever owned.

It’s tremendous. I live in Louisiana where summers are real. Larger wallets, even most high quality leather ones, can succumb to sweat/humidity much too easily. After way too much research, I learned that kangaroo leather has qualities that overcome the issues with heat. However, there aren’t many places that specialize in kangaroo leather. I found this one on Etsy, took the risk, and have now used it for about a year. It still looks brand new, hasn’t discolored, doesn’t hold in moisture, the card slots are still perfect. Highly recommended.

Pen and Notebook

Admittedly, this isn’t for everyone, but I’ve been trying to go more analog where possible. As a pastor and web designer, I’m frequently starting at a screen, so I wanted to find ways to limit it in other areas. For me, I decided to use a notebook for todo lists, quick notes, game scores with the kids, quick measurements/sketches, etc.

I love this combination, but there are times when the pen is overkill. In those instances, I choose a trusty Zebra F-301 or a Uniball Signo DX 0.38 in Blue/Black. They keep the balance between nice and no stress if lost.

Light

The nature of my job requires the frequent use of a flash light. For many, you can bypass this (after all your phone has a light, albeit terrible). Some may prefer keychain lights. But when you are frequently working in a large building by yourself, having a quality flashlight is a requirement. I’ve tried many. MANY. But the best of the best, and worth every penny, is the one that’s been with me for years.

You have to be lucky to find one now, but the Zebralight SC65c is comparable. If you’re grabbing one, don’t forget batteries and a charger.
